Parallax Photo Journal is a platform dedicated to promoting visual documentary-based work from Southeast Asia and beyond. We are committed to showcasing the work of practitioners who reside in the area, and are interested in stories that capture the rich and diverse cultural, social, and environmental landscapes of the region.

Our goal is to bring attention to work that is thought-provoking, engaging, and that offers insights into the complexities of the region.

Take a look at our stories and news for the kind of work we publish.

Do you have a story for us?

Parallax Photo Journal publishes stories about the people, places, and issues that matter most.

While our focus is on Southeast Asia, we are also interested in work that spans national and regional borders in relation to wider global issues. We believe that the issues facing Southeast Asia and its neighbouring regions are not isolated but are part of a broader global context. Therefore, we welcome transregional work that addresses issues such as climate change, migration, human rights, and social justice, among others.

We welcome submissions of personal projects. We believe that personal work can be some of the most powerful and moving, often reflecting the photographer’s own experiences and perspectives. It can be anything, something new, something old, a personal edit or outtakes you love of a previously published project, an orphan project you have no home for, a selection of your street photography, anything at all really….

We are taking a very broad approach to the concept of documentary, so if you work as a photographic artist and there is something that might possibly exist on the edges of the documentary genre, we’d be happy to take a look. We are particularly interested in projects that push the boundaries of traditional documentary photography, experimenting with form, style, and narrative structure.

On Representation and ethics

What is your relationship to the story?

We believe that documentary photography has a responsibility to engage with local communities, to tell their stories with empathy and respect, and to represent their experiences in a way that is both truthful and dignified.

We take matters of representation and ethics seriously, and your work should be grounded in the principles of ethical journalism and documentary photography.

As such, we are interested in projects that are rich in engagement with the places and communities represented, whether that is through a deep commitment to the issues, collaborative partnerships or long-term engagement.

We’ll pay you

As photographers ourselves, we understand the importance of compensating photographers for their work, and we offer a small honorarium of SGD$100 per published piece. While this may not be a significant amount, we believe that it is important to acknowledge and support the work of photographers, particularly those who are working independently.

We’ll always respond to you

We review submissions quarterly. We understand the investment in making a submission, and we aim to provide feedback and guidance to all photographers who submit their work, regardless of whether or not it is selected for publication.

If you have any questions, please get in touch. We are here, and the door is always open!
